Look beyond the calendar
Jeans worn for a quiet afternoon at a desk have had a different day from jeans worn on a crowded journey or while gardening. Check for visible dirt, persistent odour and areas that feel in need of cleaning. Wash when those signs call for it rather than preserving a wear count at any cost.
Turn the jeans over and inspect the seat, hems and pocket edges as well as the front. A pale pair may reveal marks quickly; dark denim can conceal them. Neither colour tells you whether a garment is clean enough to put back with fresh clothes.
Read the instructions for this pair
Denim can contain stretch fibres, coatings or delicate decoration. Look at the care label before choosing a wash and separate colours where instructed. Levi's recommends turning denim inside out and closing zips before washing. That is preparation, not permission to ignore the labelled temperature or programme.
Use a measured amount of suitable detergent. Adding more because the jeans look sturdy is not a reliable route to better results. For a particular stain, check a compatible treatment before washing; avoid experimenting with a household mixture on an obvious area.
Dry without a deadline
Follow the drying instructions and give the jeans enough time to dry fully, including the waistband and pockets. If you are air drying them, arrange them so thick areas are not bundled together. Keep dark denim away from prolonged strong sunlight where fading is a concern.
If your favourite pair is repeatedly needed before it has dried, the problem may be the laundry schedule rather than the jeans. Plan a wash before a day when another pair will do. Freezing denim is not a substitute for removing dirt through appropriate cleaning.
