Put the shoes first

Start with a pair you have worn on a similar day out. A new pair that feels fine for ten minutes at home may still be an uncertain choice for several hours. Match trouser or skirt hems to those shoes before adding the rest of the outfit. Leave enough freedom to use stairs and sit on a low bench.

The combination can be simple: straight trousers, a shirt and a cardigan, or a comfortable dress with a jacket. There is no need to dress like the artworks or make the visit a fashion test. Pick details you enjoy and can wear without needing to keep an eye on them.

Carry less, but check the essentials

Look at the venue's own visitor information for bag rules and cloakroom arrangements. Do not assume a large bag or backpack can be taken into every exhibition. Choose a bag that suits those rules and carries your phone, keys and other essentials comfortably for the time you expect to spend inside.

Try its strap over your jacket. If it slips or twists the garment, adjust it before leaving. A heavy bag can make an otherwise comfortable outfit feel cumbersome, so remove things you do not need for the day rather than simply changing shoulders repeatedly.

Allow for different spaces

Wear a layer that is easy to remove when moving indoors, then check how you will carry it. If the day includes walking between venues, look at the weather forecast for that part too. Keep any wet umbrella separate from the clothes in your bag. A good outfit for a gallery day is one you can settle into and forget while you look, read and move at your own pace.
