Choose the shape before the accessories
Try the trousers with a plain top and notice the rise, the width of the leg and the way the fabric falls. An elasticated waistband may sit differently from a tailored one. Check the pockets with your usual phone inside, because a heavy object can pull on light fabric.
A shirt in a similar weight creates a soft overall look. A more structured cotton top gives the trousers a clearer contrast. Either can be useful; you do not need to add texture to every part of the outfit.
Look at the fabric in daylight
Pale linen can show pocket bags, seam allowances or the outline of an underlayer. Check before removing tags from a new pair, and consider whether you are happy with the level of coverage. Choosing a suitable underlayer may help, but it cannot turn a very sheer fabric into an opaque one.
Sit for a few minutes and stand again. This gives a more realistic impression than the first freshly pressed view. If you dislike the resulting creases, a different fabric or blend may suit you better.
Keep the hem out of the way
With sandals or trainers, make sure the trouser hem does not brush the ground. Lightweight fabric can move around the foot while walking, so check from the side and back. For a cooler evening, add a fine knit or a light jacket with enough room for the top underneath. When the trousers need care, follow their own label: a linen blend, lining or trim may change the method.
